106 days is the amount of screen time an average person spends in a year. Roughly one third of people’s year is spent on phones, computers, televisions, etc.
Screen time could potentially impact someone negatively as sleep gets more irregular and mental health goes down hill. This ongoing problem that affects most people is only going to increase as time goes on.
Eventually immersive technology will be used more in daily life, by creating more entertainment platforms, social media and new learning opportunities. The main concern for the future is the overall well-being of someone. Anxiety and depression often stem from the over -usage of technology. With the growing use of AI, we can assume that AI will become more accessible to everyone.
Technology is not all bad, as it provides easy access to information that can regard someone’s health care. Also Technology allows people to find the result of a question in a matter of seconds by using google or safari.
Amaiah King, Senior at Green High School stated, ¨ My daily screen time is about 8 hours and 56 minutes and it does not really affect me that much because I do a lot of school work on it.¨
In the United States of America, around six percent of students are home schooled. Technology allows students to use various electronics to pursue their education. Ever since COVID-19, homeschool rates along with overall screen time has increased drastically. Studies show that students that do school online rather than public schooling have a higher college graduation rate, along with performing better on tests.
The growing concern with technology and social media resulted in many public and private schools across the country to issue a phone ban for the new year. As of right now 26 states have banned phones from the school environment. In Ohio, Governor Mike Dewine banned all students from grades k-12 from using phones under most circumstances.
Senior Kaydence Schiavone said, ¨i only have two classes at green, so I leave my phone in the car, which makes the urge of being on my phone not even an option. But also, it is a little scary not having it because of an emergency, because now a days you will never know what will happen¨
This issue goes back and forth with the pros and cons of having phones in a school environment. Ultimately, the state of Ohio decided that powering off phones at school helps reduce distraction, improves learning and prevents bullying.
