Green Local Schools welcomed a new face to its world language department this year with the addition of Tate Serls, who is teaching French 1 at the middle school as well as French 1, 2 and 3 at the high school.
This marks Serls’ first official teaching position. He previously served as a student teacher at Milford High School in Milford, Ohio. Now beginning his career, he said he is eager to settle into the district and grow with both students and the community.
“I am looking forward to building my relationships with the community and students as well as developing my teaching style,” Serls said.
Serls has already set professional goals for himself, including reintroducing the French Club at Green High School. Traditionally a student organization centered around French language and culture, the club had not been active in recent years. Serls said he hopes to expand participation by opening the club to both high school and middle school students.
“My favorite part about teaching thus far is the goofy interactions I get to have between myself and the students I’ve built rapport with,” Serls said.
In addition to classroom work, Serls plans to continue advancing his own education. He said he intends to pursue a master’s degree in the future while also working to strengthen his French outside of school.
Away from teaching, Serls has interests that reflect his appreciation for the natural world. He is particularly fascinated by insects and spends time outdoors observing creatures such as spiders, caterpillars and beetles. Hiking provides him opportunities to encounter and study local species while enjoying the environment.
With his enthusiasm for language, culture and the outdoors, Serls said he looks forward to growing as an educator and creating new opportunities for students at Green.
