Authorities are investigating the death of a man who died after riding the Stardust Racer roller coaster at Universal’s Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, Florida. The incident occurred Wednesday, Sept. 17, and resulted in the death of 34-year-old Kevin Zavala, according to officials.
Zavala was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner’s office reported the cause of death as “multiple blunt impact injuries.” An eyewitness told investigators that Zavala appeared unresponsive when the ride ended and that his legs seemed to be positioned unnaturally.
Following the incident, the high-speed coaster was shut down immediately. Authorities said no 911 calls were made during the event, though Universal staff members responded quickly and notified emergency personnel. In a public statement, Universal expressed condolences to Zavala’s family and said the company was cooperating fully with investigators.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office and park safety officials began a review of the ride’s operations. Early findings indicated that the ride’s systems were functioning properly and that all standard safety protocols were in place. During the investigation, authorities also noted Zavala had a pre-existing spinal injury, which the park’s warning signs specifically caution against for riders with neck or back issues.
Zavala’s family has since retained attorney Ben Crump, who announced that he is seeking video footage of the ride and inspection records. He said he hopes to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death and determine whether negligence was involved.
Police confirmed they are reviewing the case to determine whether the death qualifies as accidental or could meet the legal threshold for manslaughter under Florida law, which requires proof of negligence.
Stardust Racer, known for its dual-track design and high speeds, remains closed while the investigation continues. Universal has not announced when, or if, the ride will reopen.
