As we continue modernizing and growing, different ideas and ways of thinking form. A newer idea that has been shown and argued in recent years is that when it comes to school activities, sports and awards, everyone is a winner. This is mostly seen in schools, but it can also appear in other settings around the world. The idea has sparked controversy among older generations and continues to be debated.
I believe that the idea that everyone is a winner is not the way we should be taught. Why should other kids be rewarded for something another kid did? Why does everyone have to be recognized for something when certain people work hard and go out of their way to earn recognition? Teaching kids this will not help them in their futures. If everyone won all the time, nobody would work for it anymore.
Kids in sports practice and put in effort so they can be the best players and win the game. The other team should not win if they are not putting in that same effort. Whether it is winning a school spelling bee, a football game or homecoming court, everyone wants to win. The kid who studied every weekend for the spelling bee deserves to be recognized. The kid who only studied the night before and did not do as well does not deserve that same recognition. Getting second place encourages that person to try harder next time.
Teaching kids that they have to work for what they want will help them in their futures and show them reality. If everyone left school believing they could win no matter what, without hard work, they would struggle in life. Imagine if this idea existed at the Emmys or Grammys. Why should the actor who gave an average performance win over the one who moved audiences? Why should a song that only a small group liked win over one that inspired millions?
This idea that everyone is a winner does not benefit anyone. It takes away the value of achievement and will never help kids prepare for the real world.
