5/16/2023 – Leaving Home Field on a Good Note. Perry vs Green.

On the mound for Green was the left-handed senior, Luke Ickes. In the top of the first, Perry’s lead-off man was able to draw a walk. After striking out Perry’s two-hitter, the next batter up hit a single. Thankfully no damage was done and the Bulldogs headed to the bottom of the first. The lead-off man, Brady Rollyson tacked on a single. After a Young strikeout, Brady Rollyson stole second base and Luke Ickes was walked. With two runners on, Ryan Harrigle hit into a double play to the shortstop. There was no scoring from either team through six innings of play. In the top of the seventh, Perry was able to score two runs. The Bulldogs’ season now was in question down two in the bottom of the seventh. Brady Rollyson comes up to home plate and swings his bat for a single. Young was now up-to-bat. After a fly-out, Ickes was now up-to-bat. On the first pitch, the senior swung and drove a ball deep to right center. The hit helped score Rollyson and Green was now within reach. With Ickes at third, Ryan Harrigle stepped up to the plate. Harrigle laced and lined a ball to the first baseman. The ball was caught and now there were two out with Henry Zwisler up-to-bat. Zwisler hit a ball to the shortstop who gloved the ball and threw it to first. The season, as the fans knew it, was over. The Panthers rushed onto the field to celebrate. Hats were thrown and Green’s coaches rushed toward the home plate umpire demanding an appeal. The two umpires discussed the play at first. After further consideration, the home plate umpire called Zwisler safe which led Ickes to score from third. The Bulldogs headed to extras on a miracle overturned call. There was no scoring in the 8th inning or the top of the ninth thanks to Nate Carr. On the first pitch, the Federal League Player of the Year Brady Rollyson demolished a ball to right-center to give him a stand-up triple. With Rollyson at third, Young was up-to-bat. After a line-out to the first baseman, Luke Ickes was up. Ickes was intentionally walked. Now with runners at the corners, Harrigle was up-to-bat. Harrigle was intentionally walked. Now Rollyson was at third, Ickes was at second, and Harrigle was now on first base. With one out, Zwisler stepped up to the plate. Zwisler, with the season on his shoulders, did the unthinkable. Zwisler drove a ball to deep right-center and the Bulldogs won it. The senior coming up in the clutch was a great way to end things at home-field and advance to the playoffs. The Green Bulldogs defeated the Perry Panthers at Green Memorial Field with a score of 3-2 in nine.

Davis’s Player of the Game: Henry Zwisler. I’d simply be lying if I’d give this award to another player. Henry was dominant behind the dish and especially dominant in the batter’s box. The clutch catcher hit two singles and the game-winning RBI to advance the Bulldogs further in the tournament.

The Ellet Orangemen struck first and scored a run in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, Green responded back with emphasis. On a 3-2 pitch, Dom Manderine laced a single to left. After a stolen base on a passed ball by Manderine, Rollyson worked himself on first with a walk. On another passed ball, Manderine and Rollyson both advanced. Young was up to bat and came up clutch with a single to center. The single helped score both Manderine and Rollyson. Harrigle was able to slam a single to right and Young advanced to third. In the bottom of the fourth, Dom Manderine was the lead-off man. After a Manderine strikeout, Rollyson was now up-to-bat. Rollyson hit the ball hard through short and earned a single. Young did the same and hit a single. After an Ickes fly out, two men were on with two outs. Harrigle stepped up and delivered in the clutch with a rbi single. No scoring was allowed from Ellet’s end through the 5th and 6th inning thanks to Luke Jansen on the mound. After Rollyson was caught stealing, Ickes advanced to second base. Harrigle swung and drove the ball to center field and scored Ickes with a rbi double. After gaining the two-run lead, Jansen finished it up on the mound and Ellet couldn’t answer back. The Green Bulldogs defeated the Ellet Orangemen at Green Memorial Field with a score of 7-5.

Davis’s Player of the Game: Dom Manderine. It’s only fitting that Manderine had one of his best games of the season on senior night. Dom got the offense started during the scoring innings for the Bulldogs. With two singles, a stolen base, and scoring twice it’s only right that Manderine earned this award.
