In November, the highest grossing musical film ever, Wicked, will be returning to the spotlight in the form of a sequel. Although the story is based on the events in the Wizard of Oz universe, Wicked and the sequel are not considered canonical to the original movie/novel. Wicked focuses on Elphaba, otherwise known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and her upbringing. The sequel, Wicked: For Good, will likely close the open plot lines in the preceding film.
Leaving the audience on a cliffhanger, the end of Wicked saw Elphaba become the wrongful villain in the world of Oz because of the malicious tactics from the Wizard that occurred in Emerald City. Therefore, the sequel will likely focus on Elphaba overcoming the wrongful label as the villain and help animalkind gain their rights back. However, overcoming a seemingly insurmountable task isn’t all Elphaba has to deal with, as her best friend Glinda was split up from her at the end of the film and left in Emerald City.
“I think Glinda will turn her back on Elphaba because she cares too much about her social status,” Ayona Adekunle 26’ said.
Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, is one of many actors/actresses in the film that is returning to the series for the sequel. Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard are just a few other actors who are also reprising their roles.
“The character I am most excited to see return is Glinda,” Aaron Morgan 29’ said.
On the other hand, the sequel is expected to introduce new characters and some that may be familiar to the average fan. For example, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man will all be likely making an appearance in the new film. New characters are also expected to appear with characters such as Dr. Dillamond, who will be voiced by actor Peter Dinklage and Glinda’s assistants, ShenShen and Pfannee.
The creators of Wicked: For Good hope that the film can be as popular as the prequel and become the highest grossing musical film of 2025.
