Green High School noticeably lacks school spirit. While walking through the halls during Spirit Week, it’s noticeable that less than half of the students even participate. Our school spirit doesn’t and shouldn’t anchor off of athletic team success or pep rallies. School spirit is a vibrant energy that unites the community as one. With low turnouts and weak energy at school events, it’s evident that our spirit needs a boost. Our school spirit should be a powerful force, one that brings us together in pride and enthusiasm. Students must realize this in order to bring spirit back to Green High School.
While it’s easy to point fingers at Student Council and/or other groups responsible for organizing these events, it’s essential to remember that each of us contributes to our school spirit. We all have a role to play in making it energetic and exciting. For example, spirit week is put on by the Student Council in order to get people excited about a specific event. Whether it’s Homecoming or a sports game, students should be excited and participate in school events, no matter how silly. Whenever themes for the week are chosen, many students are quick to criticize and complain. These people are also the students who, no matter the theme, fail to participate. Many students may groan about the different themes; however, if they genuinely cared, they could run for Student Council and pick the spirit days themselves. Our student government works so hard to make our school spirit as high as possible and it usually goes unnoticed. Rather than complaining, let’s show appreciation for their hard work and participate. It is truly disappointing to walk into class being the only student dressed on theme. As the years have progressed, it’s been considered “uncool” to dress up for the school spirit weeks. Despite all of the school’s best efforts, people just don’t care about dressing up anymore.
This lack of spirit not only shows during the school day, but it’s also very evident in the sports crowds. Deservingly so, football games always attract big crowds, however, many other sports lack the same amount of love and attention from fellow classmates. There are sports that go on for every season of the school year, but none attract the same amount of crowds football does. No hate for football, the games are exciting with food, lights, and fan-spirit. Girls soccer recently won the first Federal League title in Green High School history, yet everyone was more focused on the upcoming football game. Very few students come to any other sports games besides football or basketball, even though Green High School excels in several sports. We must broaden our sports horizons and show support for all our athletes, not just the football team. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and vibrant sports culture within our school. Even during the games that students attend, the student section seems to be lackluster. Though some sports games don’t appeal to everyone, students are expected to show their Bulldog pride.
The student section has recently been very quiet. Many students like to complain about the student section leaders, however they start many chants, and try to get everyone excited for the game. The reason the student section is so quiet is not due to the silly chants, but merely due to the lack of noise and participation from the other students watching the game. Sadly, many students care more about what’s on their phone than participating in the cheers. If you don’t know a chant, learn it!
Students are so quick to harp on whoever is running anything pertaining to the school, but they don’t realize that they are half of the issue. To revitalize our school spirit, there needs to be an increase in participation from students. This entails dressing up for spirit days and supporting our peers in various extracurricular activities. Let’s not underestimate the power of encouragement. Motivate friends and classmates to participate. We are Bulldogs and need to show we are proud of it. In reality, high school is a once in a lifetime experience, so be involved in every aspect before it’s too late.
