The recent wildfires flying through the Los Angeles area have left a massive trail of wreckage, causing mass evacuations and loss of housing. As of right now, over 150,000 people have had to evacuate their homes due to the rapid spread of the fires and more than 40,000 acres of land has been destroyed.
The destructive fires formed in three different locations and continue to spread through vast areas of southern California. They started in the cities of Palisades, Hurst, and Eaton.
While the two largest fires are still burning and will take a long time to extinguish, the red-flag warnings expired in most areas. However, the National Weather Service has issued warnings of the gusty winds in Santa Ana. Although the winds can cause more rapid spread, the winds also provide cooler weather, which can be beneficial to the firefighters.
Because there were no signs of storms and other natural causes of the fires, investigators relate their suspicions back to human causes. Suspicions include: camp fires which never got put out, purposeful fires started due to the possible covering up of a crime, or even arson. According to the Oxford Dictionary, arson is defined as “the criminal act of deliberately setting fire to property.” A student from GHS witnessed a house fire across their street and many thoughts ran through their head while it was ongoing.
“My initial reaction to my neighbors house burning down was shock because I just couldn’t believe it was happening and I always had the fear of it possibly spreading to other houses including mine.” Mckenna Eckard said.
A main focal point of the fires begins around a popular landmark near a hiking trail that surrounds the Palisades Highland. As the fires descend, investigators will be able to develop a better idea of the cause of the matter.
Firefighters from around the country and even some from Mexico have gathered in California to attempt to put an end to the fires. 72 Mexican firefighters gathered in California to prepare to take on the fires. The group is made up of military specialists, engineers, doctors, and search and rescue experts. The group of personnels is equivalent to the U.S Forest Service.
“I think the wildfires are devastating and I am able to get information about the wildfires from creators on tiktok that have experienced them.” Sarah Saley said.
As people evaluate their houses the LASD (Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department) gives instructions to safely return to their house after evacuating.
While the state of California goes through hard times, the rest of the country has done a vast amount of efforts to donate and attempt to help those in need. For example, Beyonce’s BeyGood foundation donated 2.5 million dollars to the newly created L.A. Fire Relief Fund. Another celebrity that has raised funds is famously known as Paris Hilton. She herself lost her house due to the fires, but still managed to set up a fund to donate over 800,000 dollars.
Recent news has shown new signs of possible mudslides to happen in the next few days. When rain finally comes to the region, there could be massive debris flow. They are shutting off natural gas, cutting the electrical lines so nothing can get reenergized and cause harm if that would happen. Los Angeles water and power crews are testing fire hydrants in hopes of finding the ongoing water leak which could ultimately lead to dangerous mudslides.
