The Green High School girls’ soccer team is advancing into their postseason with a record of 13-1-3. Earlier this season, they defeated their leading Federal League competitor, Jackson, by a score of 1-0. After seven wins and two ties, they faced a tough loss against Revere High School.
Earlier this month, the Green girls’ soccer team was able to defeat Perry High School with a score of 5-1, putting them in place for the Federal League title game against Hoover. The game took place on Wednesday, October 11. The GHS girls’ soccer team pulled out a win titling them Federal League Champions. With goals from Reese Lipscomb, Molly Rutherford, and Anna Wells in the second half, the girls’ soccer team finished the game with a winning score of 3-0.
The team spends months preparing for each season, starting conditioning and practices as early as June. They don’t officially begin until August, which means they’ve put in a solid 3 months of hard work to prepare for their season. Since they spend so much time together and compete in a sport that requires a lot of teamwork, they complete a number of team bonding activities to garner personal connections on the field. These activities usually consist of team dinners and themed nights.
“So far [the season] has been a lot better than other years, and we have a lot more wins,” senior captain, Jamie Duskey said. “I think together as a team we’ve been working really well, and it’s shown in our results.”
Not only do the girls support each other and work together, but they support the Green High School boys’ soccer team as well. Most of the girls on the Green soccer team try to attend every home game the boys play. Along with this, the boys’ team shows the same support for the girls’ team in attending their home games as well.
On top of the team’s record as a whole, individual players are getting recognized for their work and skill. Senior Alaina Bradford was recently awarded Girls D1 Player of the Week from the Greater Akron Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association. Through this award, the Green Girls soccer program is being applauded for its success in creating great athletes.
“I feel great about it,” Bradford said. “Honestly, I couldn’t have done it without my team.”
With a successful season so far and more games to come, the community is proud of the hard work and dedication that is put into practices and games. The support and encouragement they receive from each other have been another reason they have been so strong this year. The GHS girls’ soccer team completed a very successful regular season fith a finishing record of 13-1-3.
