On Friday, October 13, the Green High School Marching band held their Class of 2024 senior night. This was done prior to the night’s varsity football game against Hoover High School at Green Memorial Stadium. Along with senior night, the band played their senior show during halftime for the first time in the 2023-2024 season.
As they do before every game, the band marched out to the Fight song and formed the shape of a “G” on the field. However, for senior night, the squads standing in the middle of the “G” formation formed a tunnel. Through this tunnel, which is on the 50 yard line, band senior members are escorted across the field by family members, and a photo is taken of them on the field. The band also celebrated the seniors with a band tailgate party where they were able to enjoy Culver’s. The seniors received a t-shirt recognizing their senior year.
The marching band also played their senior show during halftime. This show is played at the last two games of the season, along with any playoff games. The senior show, as opposed to the band’s typical halftime arrangement, is made up of songs that the senior class has played before. The seniors voted on the songs. For the 13th show, the band played “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osborne, “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder, and then “25 or 6 to 4” by Chicago. The drill to these songs, the way the band moves on the field, is written by a variety of the marching band’s senior members.
“We literally have to write out every little movement all 170 members make- every turn, how far they march, everything,” said senior Sophia Wells, who participated in writing the drill for the senior show, “It took my group 20 plus hours to write drill for one song.”
The 2023-2024 marching band has one of the largest senior classes that Green High School has had in a long time. Thus, they made a large impact on one of the band directors, Amy Rach.
“I definitely have a special place with these seniors,” said Rach, ”because they are my freshman class of covid, and seeing them have a normal senior year makes me so happy for them.”
The Green High School marching band senior night celebrated and recognized the effort the seniors in the band have put in throughout their time as marching band members.
