The Green girls gymnastics team has launched into full swing due in part to the efforts from their coach, Katie Dougherty, and leadership from junior co-captains Lindsay Morgan and Isabelle Menefee.
Gymnastics is made up of four events, which includes floor, vault, beam, and bars. Each girl gets scored individually on each event. The girls who have the best scores on the team get counted into the final score that will represent their team.
The team this year consists of seven girls: four juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman. Some of which have just recently come back to the gymnastics world and are eager to see what’s next for this team. Averie Maczko, a current sophomore on the team, has come back to the sport for the first time since she was nine years old.
“I was really nervous to come back because I didn’t know what the environment was going to be like for the team. It’s been great so far,” Maczko said.
Last season didn’t go as the team had planned. Although each gymnast made it to sectionals, none of them made it to districts. So, the girls are working hard to achieve different and more challenging maneuvers this season.
“We didn’t go as far as we wanted but everyone completed a goal they wanted to achieve,” Isabelle Menefee ‘25 said.
Being a small team looking back at last season, the girls are hard at work to improve and learn new skills at practice. The team practices together every Sunday from 4:30 to 6:30. In practice, many of the girls are striving to accomplish personal goals, as well as grow as a team. In addition to team practices, the girls spend time individually conditioning and further preparing themselves for meets.
“My goal is to go to states,” Reese Genet ‘26 said.
Learning new skills is extremely difficult, which is motivating the team to show their progress at meets by focusing and working hard.
The team will participate in two meets this season, with the first taking place at the end of January next year. After the meets, they’ll go to districts with hopefully states to follow. The girls all have skills that they are working hard to perform at their best, which they’re hoping will lead to a successful season.
