To say it simply, this movie was the opposite of fetch. I didn’t necessarily have very high expectations for this movie to begin with because the original is so utterly iconic. I knew it wouldn’t compare, but I wasn’t expecting to dislike the movie as much as I did. I wouldn’t say it was a terrible movie and it wasn’t so bad that I would discourage someone from seeing it but, I didn’t enjoy this movie.
From looking at the reviews on Google, it’s clear people either love or hate this movie but for me, it’s the latter. To start, I was profoundly disappointed in the soundtrack. Other than the Meet The Plastics song, the rest of the songs were mediocre at best and highly forgettable. Take this with a grain of salt because I have absolutely no musical experience.
I haven’t watched the original Mean Girls movie in years but the Karen from the 2004 Mean Girls acted like a stupid high schooler, this Karen was unrealistically dumb and ditzy. I think this was because this was a movie version of the Broadway Musical, but since it’s a movie I feel like she shouldn’t have been that mindless. Her stupidity in this movie was puzzling to me, not necessarily because of the things she said but because she physically looked out of it. The way she was portrayed in this movie didn’t make sense and if you want an idea of how she was portrayed in this movie, she stuck a straw in her nose instead of her mouth…
I know that Reneé Rapp got a bit of hate because some didn’t believe that she was right for the role of Regina George, but I would have to disagree. She played this role perfectly and her singing was quite frankly the only singing I enjoyed throughout the movie. She has such a distinctive voice that was perfect for Regina. No matter how many times she said the phrase “My name is Regina George ” (which was about 11 times) it never got old.
The highlight of the movie for me was undoubtedly Damian Hubbard, played by Jaquel Spitvey. His character stood out to me because pretty much everything he said had me, and the rest of the theater, laughing out loud.
I saw that a lot of people said they completely changed the plot, which was not true. A majority of the movie was exactly what happened in the original so I’m not sure where people got that from. Looking through the one-star reviews, some people said Regina didn’t get hit by the bus but I can confirm that she did in fact get hit by the bus. This leads me to believe that a lot of the one-star reviews are from people who didn’t actually watch the movie.
I brought my little sister with me to watch Mean Girls and she asked me if we could leave halfway into the movie. Not to mention that while exiting the theater, she told me that that was the worst two hours of her life.
Needless to say, there were a couple of people who left the theater before the movie was over, but there were also people who were laughing during the whole movie and even clapped when it was done. Although this movie was not for me, it was still undeniably funny and the drama in it was entertaining.
