Each year authors across the globe either continue a series, start a new book series or publish their first stand alone novel.
“Between 500,000 to 1 million new titles are published through traditional publishers,” according to WordsRated.com.
The website and app Good Reads is used by many in the reading community. Users are able to follow other people, see what books they’re reading, their opinions on certain books and new book recommendations. Good Reads also has a list of 6,271 books being published in 2024 on their website. This list is ordered by the number of shelves the book receives.
The first book off this list, at spot number one with 831 shelves, is Funny Story by Emily Henry. Emily Henry presents a forced proximity trope in this novel with characters Daphne and Miles being forced, financially, to live together as roommates. Daphne’s fiance left her for Miles’ significant other, Petra, so their living together is less than ideal. While Daphne and Miles are polar opposite from their personalities to their clothing, the two devise a plan to appear as if they’re having the summer of their lives.
As many anticipate this release on April 23rd, 2024, Senior Parker Green is especially excited.
“I have read all of Emily Henry’s books, and I have LOVED most of them. She is a perfect summer author- every book makes me want to binge read on a beach with a bowl of watermelon. As for her book Funny Story, I’m super excited! I didn’t love her last book Happy Place, but the tropes promised in Funny Story are some of my favorites, so I have high hopes. Overall, in Emily Henry we trust, my little old lady book club is going to be COOKING this summer!!” Green said.
Next, The Atlas Complex, by Olivie Blake was published on January 9, 2024. Although this has already been released, it’s still barely talked about on Booktok and other social media platforms. There are 78.3k people still waiting to read it on Good Reads. The Atlas Complex is the third novel in the Atlas series. It follows six Alexandrians who have trouble upholding a bargain they have previously made.
According to the summary on its Good Reads profile,“ It’s a race to survive as the six society recruits are faced with the question of what they’re willing to betray for limitless power―and who will be destroyed along the way.”
Despite the fact that this is a book in a series, avid reader Sophia Saley has read all of the books and is waiting for her chance to get the third book.
“I have the first two books in the series and I can’t wait to get the third one!” Saley ‘24 said.
Finally, The Reappearance of Rachel Price, by Holly Jackon, is this mystery author’s newest work. The official release date is April 2, 2024. Holly Jackson is also the author of the young adult mystery series A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder, which had its conclusion published in August of 2021. Jackson’s latest novel is centered around the new mystery of the disappearance of Rachel Price, 18 year-old Bel’s mother. Bel’s family agrees to participate in a series of interviews for a podcast about the vanishing of her mother.
Suddenly, Rachel Price appears and has a wild story for where she has been all these years. However, Bel is unsure of whether Rachel is telling the truth or not. With the podcast crew still filming her every move, Bel must uncover the real reason her mother is back and the truth of how she went missing almost 16 years ago.
Many A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder fans are thrilled for the drop of this new mystery.
“I’m so excited and I’ve been waiting for this since the last A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, As Good as Dead, came out which is one of my favorite books. I just love her writing style so much,” Emily Smith ‘24 said.
These books are three out of hundreds of thousands that are expected to be published in 2024. Whether a reader wants a romance, sci-fi or mystery novel, there will be plenty for everybody to choose from as the new year unfolds.
