In 2017 the Kansas City Chiefs selected Patrick Mahomes II. After that decision, the Chief’s organization would never be the same. Since that day, the Chiefs have been to six AFC championship games (won four), and won two Super Bowls. Mahomes has been the starter for six years, which means Mahomes has been to the AFC championship every year since he was the starter. Mahomes was drafted to take Alex Smith’s place when he retired and he studied him and how I think it is a good enough resume at 28 years of age and this will explain that how he has lost some star studded teammates and still managed to go to the biggest stage year after year no matter who is catching the ball.
Obviously Mahomes has had some help through the years as he had one of the best tight ends in the game, Travis Kelce, on his side through the whole thing; also having Tyreek Hill helping through the way as well. However, after one of the fastest players of the game in Tyreek Hill got traded, many assumed that Mahomes and the Chiefs were done. Patrick Mahomes would prove that wasn’t the case after he won a Super Bowl last year and is making another appearance all without the help of Tyreek Hill and has the stats to prove it. In the 2022-23 season he threw for 5,250 yards, 41 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 67.1%, 92.6 QBR; in the 2023-24 season thus far he’s thrown for 4,183 yards, 27 touchdowns , 14 interceptions, 67.2%, 92.6 QBR. Compared to Tom Brady’s first six seasons in the NFL, QBR 92.3, 63%, 26 touchdowns , 14 interceptions, 4,110 yards.
Losing a guy that you always threw to for four years then putting up these numbers the first two years without him is subjectively absurd. He quiets all of his doubters, and does what he does best and that is win football games.
One of the biggest things as to why Mahomes should be a hall of famer at 28 is he can do everything Brady could have done and more. He has the type of arm Brady had and his passing stats proves that and nobody wins all of the things Mahomes with a lazy arm and can’t move with his legs. Mahomes can use his legs to get plays off. He is one of the best at creating a negative play into a positive play with his arm motions of throwing the ball, whether it’s him escaping the pocket somehow and buying more time for a receiver during a broken play to get open downfield. All of those achievements at this age are more than exceptional. Not to mention the incredible resume he has built up with all of the championships he has. He undoubtedly gets him into the hall of fame if he quits right now and says I retire. That is my take, it’s really that simple: everyone hates greatness and wants to see him fall but never ever wants to respect it. I like to watch one young man absolutely dominate the league year after year. With nobody being able to beat him, nine teams passed on him. They passed on a guy who has dominated the league ever since becoming a starter.
Leaving a legacy on one team as well Mahomes has brought this Chiefs franchise back to life seemingly overnight with 6 straight trips to at least the AFC championship. If you take Mahomes away from this team right now, they probably wouldn’t make the playoffs. The presence that he brings to a locker room is another of a plethora of reasons why Mahomes might be in the future the greatest QB of all time and undoubtedly is a future hall of famer whenever that day may be, whether it be talent wise or simply the ability to win Mahomes can do it all. But, he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down as he is on his way to another super bowl. Mahomes should already be in the conversation of already being in the hall of fame and potentially being the greatest football player ever because of how no matter who he has on the field with him he will succeed. The ability to win in the postseason also not ever being affected by the big stage no matter what he does. I expect him to do the same and claim another super bowl over the 49ers this weekend.
