Spring sports is an amazing season for high school sports and a lot of people care about it. There is Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball, Track and Field. But playing in Ohio for track and field and baseball and softball is affected by the weather most of the time. In Ohio, There is so much rain in April and that leads to many cancellations. So it makes me wonder if these teenagers have the season they deserve by playing these sports that they love. Should they play some of these seasons into the early summer it is something to think about. Should they make more doubleheaders than usual? Should they have more track meets during the week than usual due to the cancellations?. All things to consider.
Should we do more doubleheaders in baseball and Softball? I am all for it to give these teenagers the amount of games they deserve to play. But many others would say that would lead to a lot more injuries and that would be concerning for a lot of the players. My argument against that is most of these kids play travel and many tournaments on the weekend anyway with multiple games even more than two games during the days anyways so it wouldn’t be a drastic change for players. I don’t think the kids would be opposed to it either because they tried out and made the team and are playing the game that they love and in early April there are some instances where they go a week without playing any games and that has to be frustrating for every class whether you’re a freshman trying to get your feet set in on a high school baseball team or if you’re a senior and it’s your very last season playing competitive baseball and softball and they have all of these cancellations has to blow really bad. When I was a freshman football player and our last game got canceled due to a Covid outbreak on the other team I was crushed by it personally. I can’t imagine for these players to have multiple cancellations back to back to try to play the sports they love in April.
Should they play these seasons into early summer if the cancellations get really bad? I think they should. I know that the school year is over going into the summer but don’t people want to let these players who have probably trained their butts off all year to even make the team or if you’re on track to even run varsity and these cancellations have made that make that training go to waste and if these players have vacations in the summer let them go on vacation but those who want to play they should let them play with their high school squad in the summer.
