With its first meeting on Sept. 13, there is a new bi-weekly club in town in room 205. It is a club where people learn to crochet. Crocheting is when people use a hook to knot yarn and other materials together to make fun designs and even stuffed animals. Crocheting can sometimes be associated with knitting and sewing, but what makes crocheting different is that a machine can not be used to make the designs and it has to be handmade. That means crocheting can be time consuming. Freshman Yaminah Adekunle said, “If you’re just doing simple stuff it might only take 45 minutes to an hour. Also, if you’re making clothing, that can take days.”
Crochet club was created by Autumn Braman, a sophomore classmate in Green High School. She thought of the idea towards the end of her freshman year and began to make the club come to life once the 2024-2025 school year started. Autumn said, “I wanted to start the club because I wanted to do something cool in high school.” Autumn had a classroom filled with over 40 students wanting to see what the club was about and join. Senior Alexandria Wolfe said, “My friends were joining and I also wanted another activity I could do leisurely.”
When creating a club at Green, a teacher is needed to endorse it. Spanish teacher Mrs. Angie Garritano chose to accept the role of adviser. Mrs. Garritano said, “I grew up crocheting so I decided to approach her and see how serious she was about it.” She put out a student survey for her Spanish class and Autumn wrote that she wanted to start a Crochet club. Mrs. Garritano soon found out how serious Autumn was when she had flyers printed and everything figured out for the club, so Mrs. Garritano decided to become the adviser for it. Autumn said, “When Mrs. Garritano said she was interested in hosting my club I was really excited and I started thinking about what I was going to do in the club and other projects throughout the year.”
Since Autumn now has a teacher, she was finally able to put things into action. She got confirmation from the principal and was able to start to promote the club and show people what it is all about. As Autumn puts it, they will be able to “Make hats and stuff and warm things for homeless shelters, animal shelters, and old people.” This club is one way to get volunteer opportunities and help out the Green community.
With all the different things happening in this club, some people wanting to join might feel nervous. Sometimes it can be intimidating to join a club. Some people might feel they are too far gone or too much of a beginner to start something new. One interesting feature of Crochet club is that it has many different levels based on how much you already know. It goes from learning how to make a single crochet and other simple stitches to making tougher and complex ones like a blossom stitch and waffle stitch. Sophomore Zeb Sucaldito said, “Once you get the hang of it, it’s easy.” It was his first time learning to crochet and he joined to help his little sister because she started her own crochet business.
Crochet club will meet next on Oct. 11, where people will grow on what they have learned from the first meeting and make crochet pumpkins. Junior Cohen Speaker-Wilcox said that he is looking forward to “Learning a new skill. I like crochet so far. It’s very relaxing for me and I want to do it better.”
Crochet club is officially in full swing and Autumn is excited for what is to come.
