Classical music is a genre that has captured the hearts and minds of audiences for centuries. From Beethoven’s intricate symphonies to Puccini’s sweeping operas, classical music has played a vital role in shaping the world’s music landscape. But despite its enduring popularity and influence, classical music is often overlooked in modern times, leading many to believe it is underrated, such as myself. Furthermore, I’ve often heard that classical music is ‘boring’; this notion needs to be challenged, as classical music offers a wealth of benefits that should be celebrated and embraced, not dismissed.
This music is a reflection of human history, emotions, and expressions, making it an important part of the human experience. Classical music has touched the lives of countless people throughout history, inspiring them to create, to dream, and to connect with one another. Furthermore, classical music has had a profound influence on modern music, serving as the foundation for many of the genres and styles that are popular today. Without classical music, the world would be a much poorer place, and it is for this reason that we must recognize its enduring importance and celebrate it for its impact on human culture and society.
Yo-Yo Ma, a well known musician says that, “Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it becomes your friend for life.”
There are many misconceptions about classical music that prevent people from appreciating the beauty and value of this art form. Some people believe that classical music is only for the elite or that it is too complex for the average listener to enjoy. Others may think that classical music is too formal or traditional, and that it does not resonate with the modern world. However, these misconceptions are far from the truth. Classical music offers a range of emotions and expressions that can appeal to listeners of all backgrounds, and it is a living art form that continues to evolve and grow. This makes classical music accessible to anyone who is willing to give it a chance, and it can provide a valuable window into human life. By overcoming these misconceptions and embracing the unique qualities of classical music, we can better appreciate its enduring relevance and influence in the world today.
For those who are unsure about how to start enjoying classical music, there are many resources and strategies that can help. The most important thing is to approach it with an open mind, and to understand that classical music is a diverse and multifaceted artistic production that can appeal to a wide range of tastes and interests. One strategy is to explore classical music through different composers and periods and to identify the pieces and styles that resonate with you the most. Another approach is to listen to classical music while doing other tasks, such as reading, working, or cooking, which can help to make it feel more accessible and less formal. Personally, I recommend composers such as Antonio Vivaldi, Frédéric Chopin, Pyotr Illych Tchaikovsky, Claude Debussy, and Clara Schumann, who can all be found on Spotify and Apple Music.
