The Green High Schools girls cross country team was on a roll when they just won the championship at the Gilmour Invitational. The team’s best performers were Lucy Sveda ‘27, Avery Price ‘25, Caroline Hayn ‘25, Allison Cicerchi ‘26, and Jenna Mikes ’27. Lucy Sveda was the top performer, as she won the individual championship.
“Our team has been working very hard this season in hopes to make it to states,” Audrey Burtoft ’26 said.
The team has placed in the top ten in all of their meets and have gotten first in two of them.
“Unfortunately, I have been injured the whole season and the federal league championship will only be my third race. The team is looking good and we are hoping to make it far in the post-season. To prepare for feds we have a tradition where we do a sleepover two nights before,” Olivia Muzi ‘26 said.
On Saturday, Oct.12th, the team competed for the federal championship at Jackson High School. All together they placed fifth beating Lake and Mckinley. The Bulldogs best of this race were Lucia Sveda ‘27, Caroline Witmer ‘25, and Allison Cicerchi ‘26.
The team had a meet on Saturday, Oct.19th at Glenoak High School to compete for a district title. They earned 6th place and went on to regionals at Boardman High School on October 26th. As a team the girls got 20th place and are now done with the 2024 season.
The Men’s cross country team is also close to bringing home the wins, as they got runners up at the Gilmour Invitational. Eric Dando ‘25 won the individual championship, followed by Micheal Elsass ‘25, Jason Hill ‘25, Tristan Rutherford ‘27, and Carter Buckshaw ’28.
“Once I got to the last mile of it and 2nd place passed me, all that was going through my head was to just stick with him. I pretty much just kept focusing on staying right behind him for that last third of the race until I could out-kick him in the final sprint on the track. After the race, I was just very relieved that I was actually able to beat the guy in second when I needed to,” Dando said.
The team has placed in the top ten three times and has gotten first place once this season in the East Canton Invite on Aug. 28th.
Along with the girls, the boys competed for the federal league championship on Saturday, Oct. 12th at Jackson High School.
“My personal goal is to go 17:30 in the 5k, which would be a personal best for me. The team’s goal is to place higher than last season, hopefully qualifying for the regional meet,” Kyle Plazo ‘26 said.
The boys also got fifth place overall beating Lake and Mckinley. The top runners were Eric Dando, who got 3rd place overall, Tristan Rutherford’ 27, Micheal Elsass ‘25, Kyle Plazo ‘26, Jason Hill ‘25, Cade McCann ‘27, and Beau Hayn ‘25.
“The team had a great race with our front runner, Eric Dando, placing third to our five-seven guys hitting some big PRs. I ran one of the better races of my season but I expect a little more from myself in this last race coming soon,” Elsass said.
With the mens and ladies team schedules colliding, Eric Dando also competed for the district title on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Glenoak High School. Dando got 12th place overall and went to regionals on October 26th at Boardman. Once again Dando got 12th place at the regional meet and now heads to states on November 2nd at Fortress Obetz.
