Airline Winter Troubles

Over the 2022 Christmas break, a snow storm hit Ohio and other surrounding areas with freezing temperatures and snow. Due to the high winds caused by the storm, many unprepared travelers were stuck with canceled flights and no way to get to their destinations. With missing luggage and plans ruined, questions arose about what they would get from their airlines.
If anyone is stuck with a delay or cancellation and doesn’t know what to do, the U.S. Department of Transportation has created an easily accessible dashboard with information about many different airline companies on their website.
“You can also use the dashboard to compare amenities that the airlines commit to provide in the event of a controllable flight cancellation or delay when deciding which airline to fly,” the U.S. Department of Transportation stated.
Different airlines have different protocols for controllable cancellations and delays. All of the major airlines rebook passengers on the same airlines with no additional cost, while other accommodations aren’t given. Rebooking on another airline with no extra cost, hotel accommodations for overnight delays/cancellations, and transportation to a hotel with no extra cost are not given by all companies.
Weather can be predicted but it is not 100% accurate, so travelers should prepare for unexpected problems with their flights. Things like making sure they have extra money towards a hotel or a new airline plane ticket if their original airline doesn’t accommodate those, and looking at the future weather are ways to ensure that travelers aren’t stuck sleeping in an airport. If travelers are stuck at airports waiting for their plane, they should bring blankets, pillows, or something soft to have while waiting in the uncomfortable airport chairs.
