Ever wondered which movies are considered the GOAT sports? Well, this is a breakdown of the top ten sports movies of all time.
Original: Space Jam by Joe Pytca
At number ten we have the original Space Jam with Micheal Jordan. This movie has some reasons why it is a top ten but also has some reasons why it is so low on the list. First off, the effects on this movie were so incredible given the time this movie was filmed and published (1996). The effects looked so good to the eyes with all the flashy effects on the court and making the things that are not life-like seem real. The voiceover people in this movie made it that much better with actual athletes in the movie like Charles Barkley, Micheal Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Shaquille O’neal, Danny Ainge, Steve Kerr, Muggsy Bogues, Shawn Bradley, Larry Bird, and Scottie Pippen- just to name a few. There are a whole lot more incredible personalities. Actors, and celebrities were in this movie as well like Danny DeVito, Wayne Knight, Jim Rome just to name a couple as well. These actors are incredible at their jobs and didn’t disappoint in this movie at all. To get actual NBA superstars in this movie made it so much better as well. The plot in this movie was incredible as well, trapping Micheal Jordan in this ultimate universe and playing basketball Looney Tunes, and trying to be the amazing underdog story and beat the Moon stars who were bigger, better , faster. Then Jordan had to break fundamentals in order to win and go back to see his family again. All of these reasons are why they made the top ten now. The only reason why it’s not higher is because I felt like they could have gone into the cartoon part with a better plot piece.
Rudy by David Anspaugh
Number nine on this list is gotta go with the underdog story of Rudy. This movie really has no weak points. I just think there are a few better ones than this movie but there are so many reasons why this movie is on this list. This movie probably has one of the best plots out of any of the sports movies. A high school kid, who was pretty good at football, dream was to play for Notre Dame but his grades were horrible. He could barely get into college, so he was a factory worker with his father but he saw an opportunity to get his grades better. Then he could prove to colleges that he could possibly excel in school and he did that, and then, after long years at small colleges, he applied, got accepted to Notre Dame, and he told his family that he wants to play football at Notre Dame and his family absolutely destroyed him. They doubted him first at even getting into college calling him dumb and then now saying you’re built like a twig you can’t play college football. Tryouts came along and Rudy with his heart made the practice squad. But they wouldn’t ever let him dress but the coach did promise him he would dress for senior day. The coach left and Rudy never dressed until all of his teammates stood up for him and wanted him to dress and he got in the game and actually made a tackle. Rudy never gave up on everything, just kept on trying and I found that really moving and touching and could be an anthem for anyone that feels like an underdog. That’s why it is at number 9.
More than a game by Kristopher Belman
At number eight I have the documentary that is called More than a game. I guess someone could say that i’m biased because I’ve grown up in Akron, Ohio and this movie/documentary is about LeBron James childhood along with his 4 other lifelong teammates and non blood brothers the fab 5 this movie portrays how these men met and talked about how all of them had problems and unfortunate circumstances that weren’t there fault but this movie proved how all of that didn’t matter and all they had was each other and that’s all they needed. The best part about this movie were the side bars and them talking us through scenes and what was going through their mind was really cool and was really cool to have a front row seat of their successful run at St. Vincent st mary’s.
Coach Carter by Thomas Carter
At number seven we have Coach Carter, Coach Carter was a fantastic plot as well with a coach coming to change the culture of a basketball team at a high school and this was a definition of an old fashioned hard nose coach where you call the coach sir and you have to have good grades. At one point in the movie he took the basketball team on strike to study because they didn’t care about their grades but it was meant for their good and they ended up being successful in the end.
“Our deepest fear is that we are not inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure, it is our light and not our darkness. That most frightens us that your playing small does not serve the world.” – Timo Cruz to Coach Carter near the end of the movie. This line was iconic. There was also a lot of drama in the movie with some violence with the players in the street, another reason why Coach Carter took that job.
Remember The Titans by Boaz Yakin
At number six we have Remember the titans with Denzel Washington as the main character. This movie comes in the middle of this list because this movie was so iconic with the race issues it was a black coach going into a white community and this movie was portraying the time way back in the civil rights days. It was moving especially with the actor Denzel Washingotn who is a civil rights activist himself. This coach also brought in some black players to replace some white players on the team and the community didn’t like that. He had to overcome so much whether it was death threats and actual attacks but he changed that football team and those players lives for good and always the funny scene comes to mind when coach Herman Boone was messing with one of the players in the you think football is still fun? He also taught the white players that just because you’re white doesn’t mean you have a spot on this team and he intends to get the best players out there to give the team a chance to win.
Major League II by David S. Ward
Me being a Cleveland baseball fan I have to go and put Major League II at number five on the list. I chose this one over Major League I because I simply liked the second one more. This movie was created by a Clevealnd Indians fan who feels our pain in all of Cleveland with not winning a world series since 1948 and this film was created in the pre 2010s when they were god awful. That man was David S. Ward said he thought if a championship for baseball won’t happen in Cleveland in real life, let’s bring it to the screen as a fantasy. This movie was to give Cleveland sports fans like me a sense of happiness and joy and hope to say maybe this can happen someday. Charlie Sheen does an incredible job at playing the main character as one of the pitchers too.
Miracle On Ice by Steven Hilliard Stern
At number four we have to go with Miracle on Ice , a movie made by Disney it was about the U.S vs. the soviets war a good ol’ good vs. evil and this movie was about a olympic hockey team for the U.S a team that consisted of late teen to early 20 hockey players and what made this movie so great was that it was so much bigger than a hockey game there was a sense all over these two nations that whoever won this hockey game would win the war. The U.S was the underdogs in this film as the soviets had one of the best hockey teams in the country and the U.S had a lot of inexperienced players and were just hiring a new coach but overall this movie was a moving story plot and a true never giving up attitude throughout the film.
The Blindside by John Lee Hancock
At number three we have to go with the blindside based on an actual true story of a family taking a kid off the streets and that family was a football family with a football coach in the house. That family got a lot of dirty looks from the town for taking him in because he was a homeless black teen his name was Micheal the family that took him in we’re leigh and Shean Tuohy. This town like a lot of the sports movies I have mentioned were predominantly white towns. Micheal Oher was a shy person who was constantly rejected wherever he went and then one day his adoptive dad wanted him to try out for the team and he performed really well and earned a starting offensive line spot one of my favorite quotes from this movie was when Micheal drove a kid all the way to the fence and there i’m over.
“Where were you taking him? To the bus it was time for him to go home.”
The Sandlot by David Mickey Evans
At number two we have the iconic Sandlot. I feel like if I didn’t put this movie on the list somebody would have caused bodily harm to me. That’s how iconic the movie is. I like it so much with its old fashioned kind of sense of the movie with the voiceover voice kind of like a christmas story is what it felt like and about an awkward kid meeting a kid mentor who was like a big brother and helped him become better at the game they both loved and that was a heartwarming relationship. The iconic beast acne where a homerun was hit into a yard and a beast was there where they didn’t care about who was there with each other they just cared about their lives and worked together to get out of that safe and with the babe ruth scenes of him being a ghost and the ruined babe ruth signed baseball that was ate it was just so iconic and had to go at number two.
The longest Yard directed by Peter Segal
In first place of Max Scheibelhoffer’s top ten sports movies goes to The Longest yard with Adam Sandler. I love this movie so much and have watched it at least fifteen times. The plot is fantastic with prisoners making a football team to compete with the guards who are an actual team and the guards need a tune up game so they play the prisoners with former NFL QB Paul Crewe as the coach and QB. this movie is comedic , dramatic, and heartwarming all in one there are many jokes in the movie and stuff that will make you laugh it is dramatic with the warden trying to rig it and get anything and everything when he wants. And heartwarming with Crewe standing up for his prison mates and not throwing the game when facing heavy pressure with the warden trying to pin the murder of his best friend in the mive caretaker on him. There was not a better actor to be the main character in this movie than Adam Sandler. I like this list what’s your top ten sports movies?
