It is no secret that snow days have been a memorable part of children’s lives. However, what if they were gone forever? This is a question that many people, and especially parents, wonder. Even though the way of communicating school closures has changed over the years, radio or television to text messages, it is still very exciting to be called off from school.
Most parents admit that snow days are a part of their childhood and think it is important for their children to experience them as well. Parents also widely agree that snow days are important to give breaks to their children to benefit their mental health. Lastly, snow days began out of safety and the need for children who walk or ride large vehicles, like buses, to school. Many children today say they don’t have enough time to be kids and have fun by doing the things they love.
With that said, about half of parents also don’t want to have a shortened summer based on snow days and also disapprove of school cancellations when weather does not involve snow. Many parents also want their children to participate in virtual learning during snow days so they do not miss out on learning. Parents also think there should be some type of snow day limits or make it so students are required to cover missed work; this would ensure students do not miss out on important concepts and are prepared for standardized testing.
Now that winter is coming towards an end, it is very unlikely to receive any more snow days. Overall, I think snow days are a very important part of our lives and should be kept around not only for the safety of everyone, when the weather conditions are bad, but also to keep the nostalgia of snow days alive.
