The Green High School Volleyball team are continuing their season out with an overall record of 5-8. The Green High School volleyball team started their season off strong with wins against Tallmadge (3-0) and Mikinley (3-0). After their two wins, the team suffered losses from tough Federal League competition- Hoover, Jackson, and Glenoak. The team is working together for comeback games later in the season. The team took back to back wins against Lake High School earlier this week.
During a difficult match against Hoban, the team played hard with amazing coverage by Ava Evans in the back row, powerful spikes by Kassidy Gorsuch, and strong blocks by Tara Kljaic. Hoban played an impressive game against Green, staying tight in the third set and eventually taking the win.
Over the off season the girls attended Warehouse, open gyms, and practice twice a week to stay in shape. The Warehouse trained the team to increase their mental and physical wellbeing through weightlifting and crossfit.
Senior Kassidy Gorusch commented, “At the end of strength training at the Warehouse, the volleyball team came out mentally and physically stronger.”
Last year the team had a 14-10 record, making it to the district semifinals. After losing some players, the team is coming together and learning how to work together. Underclassmen, coming up from JV, are adjusting to the speed change on varsity. This year, the team is composed of a bunch of young players, including some impressive sophomores like Ava Scott and Lillian Nickolas.
Senior, Sydney Peterson commented,
“This year we are down hitters so our setters are hitting. We started off good but we have some tough games coming up and we need to work through it.”
The next few matches will feature a youth night against Jackson and regular season games against Woodridge and Glenoak.
Kassidy Gorsuch is committed to play at Malone University to continue her volleyball career. Gorsuch signed in May, thanking her family, coaches, and teammates.
“I am excited to move on and play with people who love the game.” Gorsuch said.
The team will host senior night against Perry as their last regular season match of the year on October 12th. With six matches left, the girls are excited to finish this season out with their teammates and make it back to the district semifinals.
