In the sports world this month, March Madness has begun to take a rise to popularity. March Madness is when the top sixty four college basketball teams compete in separate regions with the goal of winning the National title. Teams like Duke, Arizona, Michigan are all teams who are favored, but schools such as Kansas and Vanderbilt may make a late push to make their shot at the national championship.
In the tournament there are a lot of teams like McNease and Mimi of Ohio who snuck into the tournament as a lower seed. Each year millions of fans attempt to predict all the games to obtain a perfect bracket. This is no small feat the odds of this happening are 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 . To have a bracket where all the games are correct the odds are close to zero. It is so unlikely for someone to get a perfect bracket that Warren Buffet offered 1 billion dollars to any0ne who had a bracket.
Every year March Madness is formatted the same way. There are four divisions: the North, South, East and West. Each division has 16 teams that compete to make it out. Each round has a name: the first one is the round of 64, then the round of 32, the Sweet Sixteen, Elite 8 the Final Four and finally the National Championship. Teams can gain their spot from how good of a record that they have, the strength of their schedule and if they win their individual conferences.
In the local area Akron is playing Texas Tech in hope that they can win their first tournament game in program history. Then there is Miami of Ohio. The last time they competed in the tournament was 2006 and this year they had an undefeated season with hopes that they can prove themselves to the rest of the country. Who do you think the champion of March Madness will be?
