Think about your favorite ice cream treats at your local grocery store. Drumsticks, Outshine Fruit Bars, Häagen-Dazs, and Edy’s ice cream are all owned by Nestlé. In the past week, Nestlé announced that they no longer want to continue producing ice cream.
Nestlé is one of the world’s biggest food companies, so it’s strange for this news to come out. The reason stated for this decision is because they want to focus on their biggest sellers: coffee, snacks, pet care, and food. This features popular items such as Lean Cuisine, Hot Pockets, DiGiorno pizza, Smarties, and Kit Kat. Recently they also gained a new CEO, Philipp Navratil. He announced that “the ice cream business is strong, but small, and it’s a distraction for us”.
There is no need to panic about your favorite sweet treats going completely away. Nestlé is planning on selling these ice cream products to UK-based Froneri. Froneri was created by Nestlé in 2016 with the intention of producing ice cream products. Ice cream products in the United States were sold in 2019 for four billion dollars. The remaining markets include Canada, Chile, Peru, China, Malaysia, and Thailand. The remainder of the ice cream company is around 1.3 billion dollars. Philipp Navratil wants all of the ice cream products transferred to Froneri and has stated that there will be 16,000 jobs cut worldwide within 18 months.
The company stated that it is done trying to win by being everywhere, and is instead going to win by being sharper. This is important for the market because it proves that it doesn’t matter anymore if you own everything. Companies now want clarity and to know where their profit and growth is coming from. The selling of ice cream products is to turn around the company, as Nestlé is trying to make improvements every day. There is no need to worry that your favorite ice cream will disappear, just be aware that it might be owned by someone else.
