Amazon has recently reached a major milestone in the retail industry by generating more revenue in a year than Walmart. This shift is notable because Walmart has held the top spot for over 10 years as the largest retailer in the world. The fact that Amazon has taken over this position really shows the major shift in how people buy things today.
This year Amazon reported $716.9 billion in revenue and Walmart $713.2 billion. Though it is not much of a difference this is still a huge achievement. Even a few billion dollars can represent a major change at this level of business where both operate on a massive global scale.
One reason Amazon was able to pull ahead is because of the vast amount of the things they offer. Walmart’s business focuses mainly on selling goods through their stores online and in person, whereas Amazon brings money from other places than just their online web store. For example, Amazon Web Services (AWS) rents out large computers to businesses that can store data and compute things rather than the business buying their own expensive computer. Because these services are digital, AWS has high profits. This allows them not to rely on one product for growth. In addition to AWS, Amazon also earns a huge amount of money from digital advertising.
They were also able to take the lead because of their strong position in the online shopping space. Even before Covid, Amazon led online shopping by a mile. Their fast shipping and large selection really helped them keep their lead. Walmart has made major advancements in their own online services, like Walmart+, and have increased their online sales significantly. But Walmart’s revenue still relies on their grocery sales which limits how fast they can grow in comparison to Amazon.
This transition reflects how technology is reshaping business models. Amazon’s blend of retail, cloud storage, and advertisements have allowed for multiple income streams. Companies that have a wide variety of products and invest in technologies are often in a better position for long term growth.
In the end, Amazon passing Walmart in profits is more than numbers. It represents a big change in consumer behavior and shows how innovation in the digital world can impact what it means to be the world’s largest retailer.
