Over the past few weeks, long-awaited films have been released, attracting all kinds of crowds, both views and critiques alike. Over the past week, I’ve been to the theaters twice to watch two of the most popular new-releases, and it’s safe to say that they’re both worth the watch.
Regretting You – 9.5/10 stars
This movie, starring McKenna Grace, Mason Thames, and Allison Willams, is based on the book Regretting You, but Colleen Hoover. The movie follows a mother and her daughter as they battle the loss of two important family members in a car accident and a devastating betrayal, forcing them to redefine relationships in their life.
I give this movie 9.5 stars because it was so entertaining, and kept me engaged the entire time. Throughout the movie, there were many unexpected reveals that left my jaw on the floor and heartfelt moments that left me smiling even after the movie had ended. I felt like the film did a great job accurately portraying a relationship between a mother and a daughter while also intertwining each of their journeys to find love. I also felt like it was really easy to connect with the characters, and I often found myself feeling the emotions they did or getting second-hand embarrassment for them. The only reason I didn’t give it 10 stars is because I thought there were a few extremely clingy moments that didn’t need to be included, but overall I really enjoyed watching this movie and I honestly think it’s the best movie I’ve seen in a long time.
The Black Phone 2 – 6/10 stars
This movie is the sequel to the 2021 film, The Black Phone. This second instalment takes place at a Cristian Youth camp in the mountains, where two siblings and their friend try to find the bodies of three long-lost boys. The sister, who is being haunted by their ghosts, wants to put the boys to rest hoping it will vanquish the power of a dangerous serial killer.
Overall, I would give this movie a solid 6 stars. I felt like the fact that the characters were at a youth camp in the mountains came out of nowhere, especially when compared to the first movie. However, there were a lot of good jump scares and the overall horror-aspect of the movie was very well done. In addition, the film had good character development, especially for the sister. In general I thought it was pretty entertaining, and worth the watch.
