Food stamps are the retired name for the federal Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). They provide monthly funds for low-income households in order for them to buy groceries for their families. The amount of help or money families receive is based on their household size and the amount of overall income they make.
Families are provided with a card called an EBT card that works similarly to a debit card. To be eligible one must meet the requirements via their state. In 2024, SNAP provided nearly 42 million Americans with previously called food stamps.
SNAP programs are mostly funded by the government. Due to the government’s shut down, which happened on October 1, 2025, funding for the SNAP program has gone away. Congress has failed to pass a funding bill for many different programs that affect many Americans. The Trump administration was warned that the cards to buy food will not have funding and the program will ultimately be out of money on November 1st.
SNAP is the country’s largest anti-hunger food program. This program dates all the way back to the Great Depression and, since its creation, they have never experienced this type of difficulty.
As of October 28, 2025, twenty five states have issued a lawsuit against the Trump Administration. Many Democrats and Republicans have used their voices to encourage the Trump Administration to use their funding to supply food for the ones in need.
Many states are planning to use their own funding to provide food for families that struggle once funds run out.
The state of Ohio is said to spend $25 million on food aid for low income households. “This is not a substitute for SNAP. Not every family is going to get additional funds. But we wanted to target specifically those families where we thought that they really, desperately would need the money, would need the help,” Governor Mike Dewine told reporters.
On November 3rd, 2025, President Trump called for the end of the filibuster that is controlling the food supplies for Americans.
