After the 1998–2000 New York Yankees won back-to-back World Series titles, no team had been able to replicate that accomplishment. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers overcame the odds and made history on Nov. 1, 2025, in what became the most viewed Major League Baseball game since 2017.
The 2025 World Series was the first to go to seven games since 2019, and several of those games delivered extra-inning thrillers. The longest matchup of the series came in Game 3, an 18-inning marathon that ended with Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman hitting a walk-off home run. Freeman, now a three-time World Series champion, became the first player in MLB history to hit two walk-off home runs in the same series.
In Game 7, the Dodgers fought hard to scrape out a victory in the 11th inning. Early on, it seemed unlikely they would overcome a deficit after Toronto’s Bo Bichette launched a three-run home run, giving the Blue Jays a strong lead. The Dodgers trailed for much of the game but managed to even the score in the top of the ninth.
Although the Blue Jays out-hit the Dodgers 14 to 11, Los Angeles capitalized on key solo home runs late in the game. One of the most memorable moments came in the eighth inning when 36-year-old infielder Miguel Rojas, who hit only seven home runs during the season, delivered the game-tying shot that gave his team hope.
In the top of the 11th, Dodgers catcher Will Smith hit a go-ahead home run that would ultimately decide the game. The Blue Jays had one last chance to rally after their star player, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning. However, Toronto failed to bring him home, sealing the Dodgers’ victory and solidifying their place in baseball history as back-to-back champions.
