A famous and well known painting, named “El sueño (La cama)” – “The Dream (The Bed)” by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, recently became the most valuable piece of work created by a female. The self portrait sold at an auction for an outstanding cost of $54.7 million. Prior to the auction, the portrait hadn’t been spotted for three decades.
Kahlo’s piece beat famously known female artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s Jimson Weed / White Flower No.1 which was sold for $44 million. The price of Kahlo’s $55 million work of art sold in 2025 was said to be 1,000 times what the painting was bought for in 1980. Her paintings can be seen globally due to the amount and quality of her famous artwork.
Kahlo painted this piece in 1940 during a sad and emotional period in her life. The painting symbolizes both death and traditions in Mexico reflecting her lifestyle. The bed displayed is a symbol of her bed riddenness due to her being in a near-fatal bus accident. “I am not dead and I have a reason to live. That reason is painting,” Kahlo stated.
The skeleton on the top of the canopy bed represents a Judas figure that is a common craft in Mexican culture. The bed itself is floating in a cloudy sky surrounded by vines to symbolize a connection between life and death. Overall, the painting reflects Kahlo’s inner life and the balance between life and death.
She was a strong advocate for Mexican Culture and she expressed that through her clothing. Another major thing she was recognized for is her feminism and her resilience against adversity.
Kahlo’s way of dealing with emotional stress was art. She used art to comfort her pain during her many challenges early on in her life. She was able to transform her personal emotion and pain onto the canvas where she created powerful pieces demonstrating her strength.
