“Underground”, a word used in music constantly affiliated with rap music and the hip hop scene has gained serious traction online as of late. The word is linked with rappers, mostly in the United Kingdom and United States, most notably Nettspend, EsDeeKid, and others. However, to people in the scene the “underground” is not just about the music, it is a lifestyle. From the clothes the rappers wear to the way they project themselves, most of the actions they take are meant to develop an “aura” around themselves.
“PlaqueBoyMax influences me in basketball and life because his aura is unfathomable and he has a cool style”, said Chase Woloschuk ‘28.
Although the artists and influencers in the scene may not have intended to have fans copy them, their fashion and style has spread all over the internet. In the fashion aspect, brands like Chrome Hearts, Rick Owens, Supreme and more have all become increasingly popular as a result of the trending artists. Most of the clothing worn is dark and matches the tone of their vulgar music. Tons of layers, ripped clothes and ski masks are all essential parts of the style.
A massive part of this trend is being different from the norm, with albums like Rebel, by EsDeeKid, highlighting the almost outcast-like qualities. The all-black outfits and head coverings worn by the supporters are meant to classify them as different from the rest. The music in this genre is similar to the style as the music is also different from the crowd. Known for the loud beats and hardcore style of music the artists rap about things that are not school safe whatsoever.
However, regardless of the harsh lyrics the movement is based around teenagers and young adults coming together and feeling united within the “underground”. Teenagers all over model themselves, whether it is a good thing or bad thing, after the influencers of this trend. Therefore, it has become, while not as popular as other trends, a growing brand within schools and colleges around the world.
