As 2025 officially came to an end, the window for releasing music during the calendar year also closed. Artists across all genres released an estimated 52 million songs throughout the year, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. With such a massive volume of music, questions naturally arose about which songs, albums and artists truly defined the year.
Unsurprisingly, Bruno Mars remained one of the most dominant musicians of 2025. His collaboration with Lady Gaga, “Die With a Smile,” finished as the most-streamed song of the year. Although the track was originally released in August 2024, it was re-released on Gaga’s 2025 album “Mayhem,” which helped it surge in popularity. Other top songs came from a wide range of genres and included rising artists such as Alex Warren with “Ordinary” and Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song,” both of which gained massive attention on the charts.
Established stars also continued to dominate. Kendrick Lamar and SZA teamed up on their hit “Luther,” which climbed the charts throughout the year. Interestingly, most of the songs that topped the charts in 2025 were released in 2024, with Alex Warren’s track being the main exception. One of the more unexpected chart-toppers was “Golden” by Huntrix, a song created for the popular film “KPop Demon Hunters,” showing how movie soundtracks can still break into mainstream success.
When it came to albums, pop music dominated much of the conversation, but the top album of the year came from a different genre. Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny released the reggaeton album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS,” translated to “I Should’ve Taken More Photos,” which finished as the year’s most popular album. Taylor Swift also had a major release with “The Life of a Showgirl,” one of her largest productions to date.
One of the biggest surprises of the year was the success of Addison Rae’s album “Addison.” Known primarily for her rise on TikTok, Rae’s transition into music proved more successful than many expected. Other chart-topping albums came from familiar names such as Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae and Morgan Wallen, reinforcing the dominance of already-established artists.
Overall, 2025 was a year defined by both overwhelming volume and familiar faces. While millions of new songs flooded streaming platforms, it was often music released earlier or created by well-known artists that captured the most attention.
