The Matrix, usually touted as one of the greatest movies ever, was one that I had only really known from Keanu Reeves’ character, Neo, being able to dodge bullets. However, after I watched it I realized the greatness that it had actually produced. Being ranked number 16 on IMDB’s top 100 movies set incredibly high expectations, and while I felt the movie was a bit slow and confusing at times, it still lived up to the expectations.
The idea of the “Matrix” was my favorite part of the movie for sure, an alternate reality where people are living inside of a computer is such a fascinating, but also terrifying concept. Along with that, Earth in that universe was conquered by artificial intelligence which, similar to the Matrix, is also horrifying. The movie had me constantly thinking and questioning my own reality as I was watching, however, I came to realize that either I’m not being controlled by a computer or that I just was not the chosen one, unlike Neo.
While the plot was amazing, the vibe and cinematography of the film may have been the only thing that topped that. As someone who usually enjoys more medieval films, the portrayal of a dystopian society was very well done and had me constantly admiring the visuals. Similarly, the combat in the movie was incredibly well done as it was the perfect mix of not overdoing the amount of movements while making it very cool looking and simple. The producers executed the bullet dodging and quick hand to hand combat perfectly which made the fight scenes incredible.
Overall, I enjoyed the film thoroughly and would recommend it to anyone looking for an action movie with an incredible plot. The movie likely deserves its number 16 spot on the list and I rate it a 5 out of 5, but not my absolute favorite movie.
