We use our phones and other devices for different purposes; however, I am going to focus on how our devices affect personal relationships within the world.
Even though social media allows people to connect easier than ever before, it does not always impact relationships in a positive way. Since social media is an unmistakable part of the world today, it is a hard thing to ignore or get rid of. Also, this means that because of how fast our devices let us talk to each other, we start to lose the ability to have a real conversation with someone, face to face. For example, in a conversation there is often the presence of a phone. Phones can be a distraction for conversations especially when it comes to serious topics.
The presence of a phone allows each member of the conversation to easily “check out”. People who have grown up with the existence of devices for their entire lives may lack certain skills. Texting someone does not give the same amount of social and psychological skills that a normal conversation would. It could also lead to shortened attention spans and the inability to actively listen to a friend.
Furthermore, texts can easily be misinterpreted which could cause more harm to a relationship. Even when someone is not on their phone, notifications persuade people to check their device over and over again. With that being said, the effects that devices have on our relationships is becoming more noticeable. It is important to prioritize meaningful conversations without interruptions. Just remember the next time you have a conversation with someone, make sure your device does not become a distraction from what is truly important.
