Death Valley is currently covered in flowers of pink, yellow, and purple. Death Valley is a National Park in the United States, known for being the hottest, driest and lowest parks.
This year the park is experiencing a superbloom, which they have not experienced to this intensity for a decade. This is due to the fact that during late fall and early winter the park experienced wetter conditions than usual. From November to the beginning of January they had 2.5 inches of rainfall, which is more than the yearly average of 2 inches.
The wildflowers, that are in bloom, are Ephemerals, which last as seeds unground for years until the perfect conditions arrive for the seeds to germinate. They need lots of foggy and gently rainy days and very mild temps going into spring. The flower’s biggest threat is heat and wind.
After being pollinated the flowers will return back to seed and await their next bloom. Even if there is not good rain for years they will just wait underground, due to how the seeds have evolved.
In the lower elevation of Death Valley, they are expected to stay in bloom only to mid to late March, however, at higher elevation the flowers have not yet bloomed. They are expected to make an appearance around April to June.
Abby Wines, a lead deputy at the National Park, said “By the time the higher elevations are blooming, there will be lots of flowers and they’ll be beautiful, but they’re going to be interspersed with bushes and plants, and it doesn’t create the same visually stunning landscape that you can see right now at low elevations, where a rocky landscape has transformed into a wildflower field.”
She also noted that she has seen a large rise of visitors at the park recently as they are expecting to see the beautiful flowers in bloom in the very dry park.
