Most everyone enjoys listening to music, but don’t know that music actually does more than just entertain. Music can transcend the body and touch the soul. It has the ability to go beyond what we hear and bring up emotions or even trigger memories for some people. In the academy award winning film Sinners, it is said; “There are legends of people born with the gift of music so true it can pierce the veil of life and death conjuring spirits of the past and the future.” To many people this just sounds poetic or simply movie script material but there is truth behind these words that have been spoken. Music can connect a person to their emotions, memory, identity, and something that feels larger than oneself.
Believe it or not, music can transport a person through time. There are songs that when they are played they take the person back to a specific moment; where they were, who they were with, and how they felt. This connection between music and memory is because of how the brain processes sound and emotions together. Unlike ordinary memories that can fade or become distorted, the memories that go along with a song or beat often feel more alive. Music is way more than just a sound but it is connected to human experiences that allows someone to relive memories through music.
One of the most beautiful things music can do is create connections between people. Cultures, languages, and many backgrounds, music has created experiences that don’t require translation. A simple melody can communicate sadness, joy, anger, or hope without even a word being understood. That’s why at concerts crowds will move together and have the same expression of feeling. Some generations even have anthems and strangers become friends over a favorite song. Music is such a universal language that connects people through the soul and is a deeply personal experience, at the same time.
In conclusion, music resonates because it reflects the importance of the human experience. It gives feelings that people may have an ability to reflect, release, and make connections. Whether it is just a melody that is playing or even an entire chorus, music has the ability to move people both in quiet and powerful ways. It may not literally pierce the veil between life and death but it still has a power that goes far beyond just words and notes.
