As a writer of the Paw Print, it can be difficult to know what to write about or even how to write. Thankfully throughout the years I have been able to become a stronger writer. Sticking to writing has led me to do some cool experiences.
As a kid, I used to write multiple short stories or unfinished stories that made absolutely no sense even though at that age, I thought I struck gold with my wording. I thought it was so precise that I would become an author. For example, I wrote a story based on Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series and here’s a sentence I used for context of what was happening, “12 and 7 and they were 9 and 5 when they ran away the oldest was the friend of the youngest older sibling and the older sibling died so the friend protects the youngest.” As you can see, my writing was atrocious and didn’t make much sense. To this day I’m still deciding if there are four different characters or two who grew up. Either way, I have always loved writing, but it never felt like it was my strong suit. Thankfully, I’ve grown from that level of writing and can make works that sound better and are much more interesting to a reader.
For example, when I was in middle school, there was a reading festival where a pretty well-known author would come in and give a speech. There were many workshops included with one where the author would read your work and say things they liked or disliked about it. It was the coolest experience ever. I mean, as a child getting a book read by a literal author just sounded amazing. So of course I looked back at the multitude of writings and unfulfilled ones that I wanted to expand on. I chose a book that I really wanted to expand on and would even want it published.
I named this book The Three (very basic, but isn’t minimalism the key to everything nowadays?) and it’s about three people who have a mark that makes them have superpowers. It was given to them by ancient people. Of course, there are evil men trying to steal this power for the kids.
This short story was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever written. I felt so proud of myself and seeing the annotations of an author saying things I had to work on and what I did well was such an amazing experience. I still have the book and his annotations as a keepsake.
I am so glad that I did this because even though not many people enjoy writing, even me on some days, it’s something I would never forget. Writing is just a great way to express yourself and delve into a different world you can create. I’ve made an array of stories from fantasy to a murder mystery book. Even though some of my stories didn’t make sense, I was still able to make creative stories.
